Your Questions, Answered
Let's Talk About Endometriosis
From understanding your diagnosis to navigating conflicting dietary advice, endometriosis can bring plenty of questions. Here, I share my experience and professional insights into how nutrition, lifestyle and medical care can work together to support your wellbeing.
-
Endometriosis is a chronic inflammatory condition where tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows outside the uterus, commonly around the pelvis, ovaries and surrounding organs.
This tissue can trigger inflammation, irritation and scarring, contributing to symptoms such as pelvic pain, painful periods, digestive discomfort, fatigue and, for some women, fertility difficulties.
Endometriosis is influenced by several factors, including genetics, hormones and immune system activity. Oestrogen plays an important role in the condition, but its underlying causes are complex and not yet fully understood.
Symptoms and severity vary considerably between individuals, and the amount of endometriosis present doesn't always reflect how much pain someone experiences.
-
Nutrition can play a supportive role in managing endometriosis, particularly when it comes to overall health, digestive wellbeing and maintaining a balanced dietary pattern.
Eating a variety of vegetables, fruit, wholegrains, fibre-rich foods and sources of omega-3 fatty acids can help provide nutrients that support normal immune function and general health.
Research into specific dietary approaches for endometriosis is still developing, and there isn't currently enough evidence to recommend one particular diet as a treatment for the condition.
In my practice, I focus on creating sustainable nutritional habits that complement medical treatment, rather than restrictive diets or promises of a cure.
-
Rather than concentrating on foods to eliminate, I encourage women to think about what they can add to their diet.
A varied eating pattern that includes colourful vegetables, fruit, wholegrains, legumes, nuts, seeds and oily fish provides fibre, healthy fats and essential nutrients.
Protein-rich foods can also help support energy, muscle health and balanced meals, while adequate fibre supports digestive function.
Some women find that particular foods influence their digestive symptoms, but this is highly individual. The goal is to identify an approach that supports your wellbeing without unnecessary restrictions or food-related anxiety.
-
Because endometriosis is an inflammatory condition, anti-inflammatory dietary patterns are an area of growing research interest.
Mediterranean-style eating patterns, which emphasise vegetables, fruit, wholegrains, legumes, olive oil and oily fish, may offer benefits for overall health and could be helpful for some people living with endometriosis.
However, research specifically demonstrating improvements in endometriosis symptoms remains limited, and dietary changes shouldn't be presented as a substitute for medical treatment.
I prefer to focus on balanced, achievable changes that support long-term health rather than prescribing a rigid anti-inflammatory diet.
-
My approach combines professional expertise in women's hormone health with an understanding of what it's like to live with endometriosis.
We'll look at your individual circumstances, including your eating habits, digestive health, energy, sleep, stress and wider lifestyle, to identify realistic changes that could support your wellbeing.
I don't believe in restrictive protocols, miracle supplements or one-size-fits-all solutions. Instead, I focus on evidence-based nutritional guidance and practical habits that fit around your life.
Nutrition is one part of the picture, and I'll always encourage you to continue working with the appropriate medical professionals for your endometriosis care.
